Year 6 Spring 2025

Welcome back after the Christmas break. We have lots to look forward to during this coming term and many new topics to dive into.

Main class teachers: Mrs Gibbs& Miss Williamson
PPA teacher: Mr Tull
TA: Mrs Dalton-Cole

Take a look below to see what we have in store!
Maths
We will continue to work on our arithmetic methods weekly, focussing on accuracy, fluency and speed.
Throughout the Spring Term we will cover a range of maths topics in our main Power Maths lessons. These include:
  • Ratio & Proportion
  • Algebra
  • Percentages
  • Decimals
  • Measuring perimeter, area and volume
You can see more about the specific learning objectives below.
English
Our class novel for this term is the brilliant 'The Explorer' by Katherine Rundell. We will delve into this text during our guided reading sessions, and use it as a springboard for a range of writing in our English lessons.
In guided reading, we will continue to focus on our understanding of each of the VIPERS objectives. VIPERS stands for:
  • Vocabulary
  • Inference
  • Prediction
  • Explain
  • Retrieval
  • Summarise / Sequencing
In our English lessons, we will learn about and write:
  • Non-chronological reports
  • Recounts
  • Descriptive writing
  • Narrative
  • Persuasion
  • Poetry
We will build on our knowledge of SPAG by continuing with our weekly spelling tests and weekly SPAG focus. Pupils will soon come home with their log-in details for SPAG.com an online resource we use in school to support the teaching and learning of grammar, punctuation and spelling. We will set some short tasks as homework over the coming weeks. More information about this will be shared on Class Dojo.
Science
In Science this term we will be learning about Evolution and Inheritance. This is a fascinating topic with lots to be discovered.

By the end of this unit, all children should be able to:
• Identify inherited traits and adaptive traits.
• Understand that adaptations are random
mutations.
• Examine fossil evidence supporting the idea
of evolution.
• Identify the difference between selective and
cross-breeding.

In addition, most children will be able to:
• Develop an understanding of the development
of evolutionary ideas and theories over time.
• Explain how human evolution has occurred
and compare modern humans with those of
the same genus and family.
• Understand that adaptation and evolution is
not a uniform process for all living things.
• Give examples of selective and crossbreeding.
PSHE
In PSHE this term we will be focussing first of all on Personal Safety within the contexts of living a healthy and safe lifestyle. Later on in the term, we will move on to learn about Financial Capability within the context of economic well-being. We feel this is a highly important (although non-statutory) unit to teach our Year 6 pupils, as it helps to prepare them for their future.
Art & Design
During the first half term, we will be studying artists with a link to Central and South America. This includes the iconic Frida Kahlo, Jaoquin Torres Garcia and the deam-like paintings of Leonora Carrington.
Pupils will learn about each artist in turn and produce some pieces of art in their style. This will include self-portraiture, art involving the use of symbols, and a textile piece using mixed media.
