Children in Key Stage 1 follow the National Curriculum for England and Wales. This includes daily literacy and numeracy based on the national frameworks. Initially there is a focus on securing reading skills through daily phonics teaching alongside guided group reading tasks, individual reading and books to take home.

The teaching of letter formation (See Handwriting@Isleham) and the application of phonic knowledge to spelling is an integral part of developing independent writing skills (See Letters and Sounds Parent Guide). Children are also taught ICT skills.

History, geography, science, music, art and technology are taught through cross-curricular themes (See Year 1 and 2 Overviews) which also emphasise the application of the skills learnt in literacy, numeracy and ICT. At this stage there is continued provision for some play-based learning and physical development through PE and games as well as our Forest Schools Project.

Swimming is taught during the Summer and Autumn terms in our own heated pool.

French is introduced through action songs, rhymes and simple games from Year 1 onwards.
