Sports Premium Funding

The PE and Sport Premium is a government initiative aimed at giving children an active start in life. It supports primary schools in enhancing the quality of their PE and sport provision, ensuring pupils benefit from regular physical activity. These benefits include improved physical and mental health, better behaviour, and stronger academic performance.

Vision and Key Indicators

The Department for Education’s vision is that all pupils leave primary school physically literate, equipped with the knowledge, skills, and motivation to lead healthy, active lives and participate in sport throughout their lives.

The objective is to create sustainable improvements in PE and sport by delivering a high-quality, balanced, and holistic offer. Schools should see progress across five key indicators:

  1. Engagement in regular physical activity
The Chief Medical Officer recommends that children aged 5–18 engage in at least 60 minutes of physical activity daily, with 30 minutes taking place in school.
  2. Raising the profile of PE and sport
Using PE and sport as a tool for whole-school improvement.
  3. Staff confidence and competence
Increasing teachers’ knowledge, skills, and confidence in delivering PE and sport.
  4. Broader experiences for pupils
Offering a wide range of sports and physical activities.
  5. Participation in competitive sport
Encouraging pupils to take part in competitive events.
